Module 13
HAGAR practice: the HPAC sample questions
The 64 practice questions that HPAC publishes in its HAGAR Study Guide, with the answers HPAC expects and a one-line reason for each. Work through them until you can answer every one from memory. The 14 map questions in HPAC's set need chart extracts; Module 12 covers them by method.

How to use this module
Below, in Check yourself, are HPAC's own sample questions for the HAGAR exam (Annex A of the HPAC/ACVL HAGAR Study Guide, version 3.1). They are close to the style and content of the real Transport Canada exam. Some questions are old or oddly worded; the note under each one tells you the expected answer and, where the wording is strange, why. Do the whole set at least three times on different days. When you can score 90% here, you are ready for the regulations part of the HAGAR. Then do the map module.
Two things to know about these questions
- Some questions are older than the current rules. Where the expected answer differs from today's regulation (for example the half-hour daylight rule, or the "five minutes" wake-turbulence figure), the note says so. On the HAGAR, give the expected answer.
- Two questions ask the same thing with different expected answers (daylight: questions 21 and 24). Real exam banks contain both versions. Learn both: "half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset" and "morning civil twilight to evening civil twilight".
What HPAC's map questions look like
HPAC's set ends with 14 map questions on the Vancouver and Montreal charts, for example: What can be found at N48°41.03′ W123°55.33′? · What are the coordinates of Victoria International Airport? · What activities can you expect in CYA 118 (A)(T)(H)? · What is the class of airspace at 3,000 ft ASL at these coordinates? · What is the highest obstacle within CYA 621 (H)? · What type of control zone does St-Hubert have, to what altitude, and what airspace is above it? The real exam asks the same kinds of questions on whatever chart section you are given. Module 12 gives the method for each of these question types.
